Fishing for the Giant Freshwater Stingray. You've heard about it. You've seen it
on television. Now we bring it to you. But not just any fishing
— of course not — we bring you the best — the team that brought
this type of fishing to the world along with possibly the new world record for
the heaviest freshwater fish caught on rod and reel. The team that worked with
National Geographic and Mega Fishes Project on the study of the Giant Freshwater
Stingray.
You're week long adventure begins when you arrive in Bangkok. From the airport you
will head to your hotel for a good nights sleep. The following morning will find
you in the company of courteous staff members headed to the nearby Ban Pakong
River. The river is about forty minutes from downtown Bangkok.
Your fishing begins on the bank of the river. One of your guides will take your
line and bait by boat some 300 meters or more to the middle of the river, where it will
be anchored to the bottom waiting for a giant freshwater stingray to swim by. Our team
has captured numerous giant freshwater stingray from this record breaking stretch of
tidal river up to an estimated 220 kilograms, or 484 pounds.
In your hand will be large two speed multipliers (Shimano TLD) reels loaded with
100 pound Power Pro braided main line, coupled with 150 pound class boat rods fitted
with roller guides. On the end of this will be ten meters of 150 pound fluorocarbon
shock leader, then 200 pound wire or fluorocarbon leader to the 9/0 Owner hook.
Once you've hooked one of these predatory giants, you'll board a boat and do battle
with the unseen leviathan mid river. Battles are typically long, some lasting for
many hours and requiring the assistance of a number of your guides. In the final
moments of the fight several guides, and at times several boats, will assist in
a successful landing.
Once the giant freshwater stingray is brought alongside the team will immediately
secure its tail carefully wrapping and binding the deadly barb with a piece of cloth.
Other members of the team will carefully secure the fish with a strong chord through
the spiracle in order to safely transport the ray to the rivers edge.
Once along the shore the fish is allowed to rest and recuperate before photographs
begin. Our passionate, conservation minded team will take the utmost
care handling these fabulous fish throughout the capture and release process with
all fish safely released unharmed after accurate measurements and other scientific
data have been recorded.
While fishing at the Ban Pakong River all photographic and angling requirements will
be catered to by the team ensuring that you get perfect pictures of your fish of a
lifetime!
Note: There are two rivers we fish for the Giant Freshwater Stingray; the Ban Pakong
River which originates in the North, and the Maeklong River which originates in the
Northwest. Each river has a different source. Prior to your arrival our guides will
check the conditions of both rivers, then deciding on which will give you the highest
chances of success.
