Striped Hyena Hunting African Safaris |
![]() African Striped Hyena(Hyaena hyaena dubbah)
Current all time records Description: The hyena is a big animal, with a length of almost 5ft and a height of around 2.9ft. It weighs about 38kg. Females weigh about 4kgs less. These animals could easily be mistaken for a leopard in bad light, but for their dog-like gait. The hyena has a massive head and fore body, with strong powerful forelegs, but weak rear quarters. Short legs and a dorsal crest of long stiff hair make this a strange looking animal. Its color varies from creamy buff and tawny to gray or dirty white during summer. Other Common Names: Size: Range: Throughout south of the Sahara; year around. Natural History: They are not often seen in forested areas. Low hills areas and broken country, full of holes and caves are preferred. They are also seen in high grass amongst bushes and in cane fields. Being nocturnal they are out at night and back to their den by daylight. Hyenas are often seen in small groups of 5 or 6 animals. Hyenas were considered to be confirmed scavengers, but research in Africa shows that hyenas hunt on their own too. Their rear feet and thigh pads are uneven and oval. The hyena has among the most powerful jaws of all predators. Hunting Characteristics: |
