Range: (Domestic goats have been released throughout the world and are feral or wild): Primarily Texas; year around.

Natural History: Outside the main rut, which occurs in autumn, the males and females tend to live separately on herbs, grass and heaths. Goats never stray far from shelter, as they are very susceptible to cold and wet. They tend to feed during the day and spend the night (especially in winter) in a cave or other sheltered spot. Even during the day if a heavy shower comes along they will run for shelter.

Kids (usually one, occasionally two) are generally born in late winter/early spring although some populations have 2 kiddings a year, mid winter and late summer. During the first few days of life the kids are left in a sheltered spot while the nanny goes off to feed. The nannies will suckle their kids for 3-4 months.

During the rut mature males will consort with oestrus nannies and defend them vigorously against other suitors. The younger males adopt a strategy of moving large distances in an attempt to find oestrus females who do not yet have a consort.
