White-lipped Peccary (Tayassu pecari) Search Our Hunting Trips for: Current SCI all time record: Score 16 1/16 - Mexico, Campeche - 4/97 Description: Peccaries are piglike, with a stout body, thick neck, large head, tiny tails and thin, delicate legs. They have long and coarse hair of dark reddish brown to black, and white on the side of the jaws. They have forefeet with two large weight-bearing toes and two smaller toes used only on soft substrates, all toes with hooves. Their hindfeet consist of two large toes and one smaller one. Peccaries have large, sharp canines that form a distinct lump under the lips. They also have small eyes and small ears. Other Common Names: Size: 75 lb and 22 inches at the shoulder. Range: Southern Mexico and Central America; year around. Natural History: These animals are mainly vegetarian. They eat such foods as cactus fruit, berries, tubers, bulbs, and rhizomes, but occasionally will consume snakes and other small vertebrates. They have a habit of staying near waterholes or streams where water is plentiful. Peccaries live in a variety of habitats, including desert scrub, arid woodland, and rain forest. Thickets, limestone caves, and large boulders serve as shelters. They are most active during the night or in the cooler hours of the day and tend to stay close to their place of birth. Their speed, agility, and group defense are comparable to dogs, coyotes, and even bobcats. Hunting Characteristics:
