- Hunt Description
-
The Selous Game Reserve is the world's largest game reserve at just under 55,000 square
kilometers of unspoiled wilderness. These areas consist of riverine forests and Miombo
woodlands, and produces excellent East African Eland, Elephant, Cape Buffalo,
Nyasa Wildebeest, Leopard, Crocodile, and general plains game. The Selous is hunted
from July to November and hunts are conducted in K1 and K2.
Located in the North West portion of Selous, these two adjacent areas border the Kilombero
River and the Luembero River. Having 2 concessions together offers a tremendous amount of
hunting. We have 2 main camps, and one smaller camp in these areas. Because this area is in
the Kilomero River Valley, it does not have the traditional Selous lions which are known to
have sparse manes. Rather, the lions are full maned and actually have the same genes as our
premium lion area Ruhudji. This area also has huge leopards, vast herds of buffalo (averaging
between 36" and 42"), a lot of elephant (with the classic long thin ivory of the Selous) great
crocodile (2 over 15 feet taken last year), Hippo, Puku, Roosevelt Sable, Kudu, Bushbuck,
Bushpig, and all the standard plains game. Because of the permanent water sources, these two
areas are excellent throughout the season. It also has excellent tiger fishing.
At the beginning of each safari, your Professional Hunter will sit down
with you and your party. He will discuss your expectations, safety in the bush, and how
the safari will be conducted. As this will be the experience of a lifetime, we want to be
sure that everyone is comfortable.
Your hunting day begins early. The staff will prepare a breakfast of your
choice and then load all of your gear on the truck. All of our concessions are over 2400
square kilometers so you will have plenty of country to explore. While we have roads that
skeleton the area, you will spend much time off road checking new country.
Depending on your travel we may return to camp for lunch, but usually the camp staff will have
prepared a variety of freshly cooked meats, pasta, rice, breads, fruits, and vegetables, that
will be packed in a lunch box.
We may drive up and spot Buffalo from a distance and then plan a stalk. Quite often, however,
we cross fresh spoor and then go afoot to begin tracking. As hunting is, this may be quick or
it may take time. Our staff will always carry water and work to your abilities. While you may
have the opportunity to shoot your buffalo at 100 yards or more, quite often we will have you
within 50 yards for your shot or closer!
Along the way each day we will also be looking for a variety of plains game to add to your
license and your experience. You will be greeted each afternoon by our camp staff as you
arrive. They will carry your gear to your tent, prepare your shower, and get you a sundowner
of your choice to enjoy at the camp fire. Dinner will cap your day and be certain not to
disappoint you!

- Camp & Accommodations
-
Camps in Tanzania are luxury tented camps built in the traditional East African style.
These large tents are insect proof and have ensuite bathrooms with verandas where you
can have a welcoming "sundowner" after a long day of hunting. Camps are fully equipped
with fridges, freezers, lighting, and an experienced staff to make your safari as
comfortable as possible. Daily communication is maintained with the Arusha office, and
in case of the slightest emergency, a flying doctor service is made available to provide
first-rate medical attention. Upon request, a satellite phone is also available.
Fine dining is included in your safari, and the cooks cater to all tastes, using fresh
and canned foods to provide gourmet meals to the highest of standards. Laundry is also
done daily, and clothes put out in the evening are usually ready the next day.
Each professional hunter has a modern 4X4 vehicle, complete with trackers and personal
gun bearers. As all of our PH's are raised in East Africa, they have an intimate
knowledge of the game and people, ensuring the success of your safari.
