Weatherby Mark V® CFP (Compact Firing Platform) Offers New Option for Handgun Hunting

Weatherby re-enters the handgun hunting market with the new Mark V® Compact Firing Platform (CFP), available in chamberings suitable for varmints as well as whitetail deer and other big game.

The CFP offers the features and proven performance of Weatherby's Mark V action for standard calibers, in a package that measures only 27 1/2 inches long and weighs just 5 1/4 pounds.

"Our new Mark V CFP is a tweaked and refined version of a previous CFP we offered in the late 1990s," said Brad Ruddell, Weatherby's vice president of sales and marketing. "Actually, we think of the CFP as a varmint or big game firearm for those who want to add a new dimension or additional challenge to their hunting. Whatever the case, it's made to deliver the accuracy and reliability that are necessary for a fun day of shooting in the field."

The CFP's action for standard cartridges is a lightweight version of Weatherby's magnum-cartridge action, and is designed to live up to the Mark V action's reputation for safety and strength. It features a one-piece forged and fluted bolt with six locking lugs. The one-piece forged and machined steel receiver has an integral recoil lug for superior strength and structural integrity. To maximize safety, the bolt sleeve completely enshrouds the rear of the action, and the cartridge case head is encased in three rings of steel.

To ensure top-notch performance, the action is designed to be non-binding-smooth and stable-with a 54-degree bolt lift for faster cycling on follow-up shots and greater bolt-to-scope clearance.

The CFP is pillar-bedded in a specially-designed Fibermark® composite stock. Predetermined bedding points add to the consistent, repeatable accuracy of the firearm. Black spiderwebbing on the tan stock helps provide a sure grip as well as a distinctive look. An ambidextrous grip design accommodates right- or left-handed shooters. (Bolt setup is on the right-hand side.) The grip area is preformed to match the natural shape of the hand for a sure, comfortable feel.

Another accuracy-enhancing feature is the button-rifled, #2 contour, 16-inch chrome moly (4140 steel) barrel, which has a custom target crown. All metalwork is bead blasted to a matte blue to reduce game-spooking glare.

Other features include a cocking indicator and adjustable trigger.

The Mark V CFP is available in .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester and 7mm-08 Remington. Magazine capacity is 5+1.

Manufacturer's suggested retail price is $1,499. Like all Mark V firearms, the CFP comes with an accuracy guarantee of a 1 1/2-inch, 3-shot group from a cold barrel at 100 yards when used with premium ammunition.
