'My First Weatherby': The New Vanguard Compact

Weatherby's new Vanguard Compact rifle sports a scaled-down hardwood stock bed to a lighter-than-standard short action designed for young hunters.

The Vanguard Compact is different from other youth rifles in that it is paired with a separate full-size drop-in injection-molded composite stock that can replace the hardwood stock, allowing the rifle to "grow" with the hunter. Like all Vanguard rifles, the Compact offers a variety of Weatherby's accuracy-enhancing features and comes with a factory-shot target that guarantees accuracy of 1 ½ inches (3-shot group at 100 yards when used with premium or Weatherby factory ammunition).

"As the father of a son and daughter who hunt, I want a rifle they can grow into, instead of outgrow," says Brad Ruddell, Weatherby's vice president of sales and marketing. "With the Vanguard Compact's two stocks, you basically get two rifles for the price of one, yet the Compact remains a Weatherby through and through. It has many features in common with our Mark V rifles, making it an outstanding value priced well within the reach of most hunters. In fact, you can think of the Vanguard Compact as a 'my first Weatherby' rifle."

Manufacturer's suggested retail price for the Vanguard Compact is $549. Key features include:

• Short barreled action (20-inch, #1 contour cold hammer forged steel barrel)
• Hardwood stock with short 12 ½ -inch length of pull for young hunters
• Non-reflective matte black finish on hardwood stock
• Monte Carlo design for both the hardwood stock and injection-molded stock
• Matte-black metalwork

Other features, standard on all Vanguard rifles, include a one-piece forged, fluted bolt with three ports that allow high-pressure gases to escape in the event of an accidental case rupture. An easy-to-see cocking indicator provides an extra measure of safety. The trigger is fully adjustable to match individual preferences.

Measuring 38 7/8 inches in overall length, the Vanguard Compact weighs 6 ¾ pounds. Drop at comb, ¾ inch; drop at heel, 1 1/8 inch.

The Vanguard Compact is available in .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester and .308 Winchester. Right-hand model only.
