Weatherby Introduces Stainless Steel Version of Vanguard Sporter Rifle

Weatherby's Vanguard Sporter SS rifle offers a new alternative to hunters and shooters who prefer the look of a traditional wood stock combined with the benefits of stainless steel at an affordable price.

"Numerous customer requests for a rifle with a nice wood stock and stainless steel metal work prompted us to the develop the Vanguard Sporter SS," says Brad Ruddell, Weatherby's vice president of sales and marketing. "Like our popular Vanguard Synthetic and Stainless models, the Sporter SS has many accuracy-enhancing features in common with Weatherby Mark V rifles and is covered by our accuracy guarantee, yet it is very reasonably priced. Weatherby looks and performance at a great value-that's the Vanguard Sporter SS."

Manufacturer's suggested retail price is $701. Vanguard rifles are the only production rifles that come with a factory-shot target and accuracy guarantee of 1 ½ inch or better 3-shot group at 100 yards with a cold barrel when used with premium (non-Weatherby calibers) or Weatherby factory ammunition.

Weatherby's Vanguard Sporter SS has a figured walnut stock with a satin urethane finish. The stainless steel metalwork is bead blast to a matte finish, eliminating game-spooking glare while helping to resist the ill effects of rain or snow.

The stock also features Weatherby's famous Monte Carlo design for quick eye-to-scope alignment and faster target acquisition. It is accented with a contrasting rosewood forend tip and fineline diamond point checkering. Handed-bedded to the barreled action, the stock has a forend pressure point that helps dampen barrel harmonics to enhance accuracy. A rubber recoil pad is standard.

Other features include a 24-inch, #2 contour cold hammer forged 4140 steel barrel. The barrel has a radius crown for consistent accuracy and protection of the rifling. Muzzle diameter is .616.

Other key features:

  • The action incorporated Weatherby Mark V action. For example, the one-piece forged, fluted body has three ports that allow high-pressure gases to escape in the event of an accidental case rupture. The bolt sleeve completely enshrouds the rear of the action to provide protection from high-pressure gases and brass particles, should the case rupture. The bolt shroud has a traditional side release of the bolt assembly, which is made from 4140 steel. To enhance the rifle's appearance and value, the bolt knob is knurled.
  • A one-piece forged and machined 4140 steel receiver is designed for exceptional strength and structural integrity.
  • The bottom metal and floorplate are constructed from a combination of steel and a lightweight alloy. The floorplate release is located on the outside of the triggerguard for easy access.
  • An easy-to-see cocking indicator provides and extra measure of safety.
  • The trigger is fully adjustable for let-off weight and sear engagement to match individual preferences.
  • An M16-style cartridge extractor is designed to ensure positive extraction.

Measuring approximately 44 or 44 ½ inches (depending on caliber) in overall length, the Vanguard Sporter SS has a length of pull of 13 ½ inches. Drop at comb, 5/8 inch; drop at heel, 1 1/8 inches. Weight is 7 ¾ pounds.

The Vanguard Sporter SS is available in magnum or standard calibers suitable for varmint, deer or big game hunting: .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .257 Weatherby Magnum, .270 Winchester Short Magnum, 7 mm Remington Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, .300 Winchester Short Magnum, .300 Weatherby Magnum and .338 Winchester Magnum. The Vanguard Sporter SS comes in a right-hand model only.
