Weatherby Vanguard Rifle Goes SUB-MOA

Weatherby guarantees its new Vanguard SUB-MOA hunting rifle to shoot a three-shot group of .99 inch or less at 100 yards when used with specific Weatherby factory or premium (non-Weatherby calibers) ammunition.

"Because we factory-shoot every Vanguard rifle, we know that a number of exceptionally accurate Vanguards are produced each year," says Brad Ruddell, Weatherby's vice president of sales and marketing. "Armed with this knowledge, we decided to take Vanguard's accuracy guarantee to the next level. We handpick factory test-fired targets with a maximum of .75 inch MOA so we can be certain of our .99 inch or less MOA guarantee. To help achieve this standard, the Vanguard SUB-MOA utilizes a 24-inch barreled action pillar bed to the latest in stock technology. If you're looking for an affordable hunting rifle with tack-driving accuracy, this is it."

Weatherby's Vanguard SUB-MOA rifle is available in Matte and Stainless models. The SUB-MOA Matte features matte black metalwork.
The SUB-MOA Stainless sports stainless steel metalwork bead blast to a matte finish.

The metalwork on both models is non-reflective to eliminate game-spooking glare.

Along with the written accuracy guarantee, each SUB-MOA rifle comes with a factory-shot target and a list of factory test ammunition.

An accuracy-enhancing composite Fiberguard pillar-bedded stock (a combination of Aramid, fiberglass and unidirectional graphite fibers) is standard on the Vanguard SUB-MOA. The stock's raised-comb Monte Carlo design allows for quick eye-to-scope alignment and fast target acquisition. Gray spider web accents give the black stock on the Stainless model a distinctive look. The Matte model sports a tan stock with black spider web accents. A Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad is included.

Other accuracy-enhancing features of the Vanguard SUB-MOA include a 24-inch #2 contour cold hammer forged steel barrel. The barrel has a radius crown for consistent accuracy and protection of the rifling. The trigger is fully adjustable for let-off weight and sear engagement to match individual preferences.

Additional key features:

  • The action incorporates many features of the Weatherby Mark V action. For example, the one-piece forged, fluted bolt has three ports that allow high-pressure gases to escape in the event of an accidental case rupture. The bolt sleeve completely enshrouds the rear of the action to provide protection from high-pressure gases and brass particles, should the case rupture. The bolt shroud has a traditional side release of the bolt assembly. To enhance the rifle's appearance and value, the bolt knob is knurled.
  • A one-piece forged and machined receiver for exceptional strength and structural integrity.
  • The bottom metal is a lightweight alloy of one-piece construction. The floorplate release is located on the outside of the triggerguard for easy access.
  • An easy-to-see cocking indicator provides an extra measure of safety.
  • M16-style claw extractor to help ensure reliable and positive extraction.

Measuring 44 or 44 ½ inches in overall length (depending on caliber), the Vanguard SUB-MOA has a length of pull of 13 ½ inches. Drop at comb, ¾ inch; drop at heel, 1 ½ inch. Weight is 7 ¾ pounds.

Each model is available in magnum or standard calibers suitable for varmint, deer or big game hunting: .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .257 Weatherby Magnum, .270 Winchester Short Magnum, 7 mm Remington Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, .300 Winchester Short Magnum, .300 Weatherby Magnum and .338 Winchester Magnum. The Vanguard SUB-MOA comes in a right-hand model only.

Suggested retail prices are $799 for the Matte model and $919 for the Stainless model.

A number of customizing options for Vanguard SUB-MOA and other Vanguard rifles are available through the Weatherby Custom Shop. Options include a composite Accuguard stock (raised-comb Monte Carlo design), available in six color patterns, with CNC-machined aluminum bedding plate; stainless steel barreled action with longitudinal flutes to reduce weight and dissipate heat; and accuracy-enhancing recessed field or 11-degree parabolic target crowns.
